Crossed Diamond Block Tutorial

This month's block tutorial is brought to us by Melissa from Sew BitterSweet Designs.

Hi Everyone! This block probably has lots of names, I am calling it Crossed Diamonds. It is super easy to put together, which is always a bonus in my opinion.  All seams are 1/4".

If using the color layout in the block above, you will need to cut:

For the half square triangles:
2 gray squares - 5.5" x 5.5"
2 white squares - 5.5" x 5.5"

4 Yellow Rectangles - 3.5" x 5"
1 Aqua Square - 3.5" x 3.5"

There are lots of different ways to make Half Square Triangles, I use a 1/2" ruler with a line down the center. On the two white squares, line the center of the ruler on the diagonal of the square and mark on either side of the ruler. You will then place the white square, right sides together with the gray squares and sew along both lines that you marked (this method seems to work best with my machine).

You can also mark the line from corner to corner along the diagonal and sew 1/4" from either side of the line.

Cut along the diagonal of the block regardless of the method you use. Press your seams to the dark side.

Trim your half square triangles to 5"x5".

Layout your block as pictured below and sew!

For this month's blocks we are asking everyone to stick to the colors of White, gray, yellow and aqua. The color layout is entirely up to you. Feel free to change where the colors are located. For example, feel free to use the aqua as the cross and yellow as the HST and the gray as the center.

Thanks everyone! We look forward to seeing your blocks in November!
