October Meeting Notes & Recap

We had a pouch exchange at our October meeting.  So many fabulous creations.

Blocks were collected for the improv charity quilt.  If you have any blocks please bring them to the NOVEMBER meeting.  We need more.

In the picture you above you can also see some of the October blocks for our Patchwork City quilt along.  You can see notes, instructions and date guidelines at any time by clicking on the QAL button above.  Our current blocks are Planter Box (pg68) and Sequins (pg70).

We always have a guild charity quilt or two going.  The guild members bring in blocks (shameless reminder to bring your improv blocks to the November meeting) We then take turns piecing them together, quilting and binding them.

Stacked Strips

At our November meeting we will be electing new officers.  Many of our officer positions are coming open, so be thinking about where you would like to serve your guild as well as who you want to nominate.  It was decided at the October meeting that if you are nominated as Vice President you can choose to serve the next year as President, but it will not be mandatory to make that 2 year commitment.

Be sure to check out our Facebook page for more pictures and up-to-date guild information.

September Meeting Recap Part 2

The September meeting was packed full of goodness.  We had a pillow swap, demonstrations and our usual show-n-share.   Here are some pictures from this fun meeting.

3 of our guild members put on live demonstrations, including how to make a pouch.  ***hint-hint- Pouch swap is due at the October meeting 10-7-15

Patchwork City Blocks
Several members of our guild are each working on their own patchwork city quilt using Elizabeth Hartman's book.  Each month we have 2 blocks to complete to stay on pace to finish together.  September blocks were Parking Garage (pg 60) and Half Sandwhich (Page 62)  October blocks are Rec Center (pg 64) & Onramp (Pg 66)

For more information on the Patchwork City Quilt Along click on QAL button at the top of this blog.

One of our favorite parts of any meeting is seeing what our fellow guildies have been up to.

Our next meeting is tomorrow night, October 7 @6:30pm by at Ruby Street Quiltworks.  Come early for the Sew-In that starts at 4pm.   Remember to bring your pouch swap, charity blocks and show-n-share items.  See you there!

September Meeting Recap Part 1

It's almost time for our October meeting tomorrow, and I realized that I had not yet posted the pictures from September.  Hopefully they are better late than never.

First up we welcomed a new baby to our guild.  Laurel has been working hard on this special project and brought her in just 5 days after she was "completed".   Congratulations to Laurel and her family on this precious new addition.  <3  You win the prize for best finish in September.

Our September swap was a pillow swap.  The guild members really outdid themselves making pillows with their specific swap partner in mind.  Here are just some of the fluffy goodness exchanged.

Some of the ladies held up their pillows too fast for me to capture.  Each one was unique and sure to be well loved.

Patchwork City Quilt Along

This year our guild is doing a monthly quilt along using Elizabeth Hartman's Patchwork City book.   We have dedicated a page to the QAL with tips, ideas and a schedule of when each block is due.  The page can be found on the header bar on the blog or you can CLICKY to go there now.

September's blocks are:

 -Parking Garage (pg 60)
*this one is pretty straight forward. Remember that you don't have to use seven different fabrics, only 7 different cut sizes.

-Half Sandwich (pg 62)      *This one includes templates. If you don't want to use the templates to create the C/D unit (HST) it is 3.5 inches unfinished.

May BOM ~ Scrappy Sprouts

The May Block of the Month will be Scrappy Sprouts and due at the June 2015 SSMQG meeting.  The block was chosen by this month's quilter Karen Shaw.  Here are the instructions she wrote up for us.

Scrappy Sprouts Quilt Block

materials needed (to make one block):
(6)  2.5” Low volume squares – this will be the background
(2)  3” low volume squares - to become HST of background and sprout petal
(8)  2.5” color squares – this will be the sprout petal color
(2) 3” color squares – to become HST of background and sprout petal
(1) 1.5” x 6.5” green – stem

  1. Make HST of background and sprout petal color. Use your preferred method. HST needs to measure 2.5” unfinished.  (I make mine a bit larger and then trim down)

  1. Layout all unfinished pieces as you would sew them. Trust me, this will make the process easier!  Sew each sprout petal section in rows, pressing each row in alternate directions. (for ease of sewing each sprout section together press away from the HST square)

  1. Sew each of the rows together, making 2 sprout sections. Press (up or down, doesn’t seem to matter). Sew each sprout petal half to stem. Press sprout petals towards stem. Image

  1. Woohoo, finished!

Please make at least 4 blocks in colors of your choice (red, yellow, green, blue, purple, orange, pink).

Blocks should finish to 13.5” x 6.5” unfinished.
